A large proportion of Anglo-Indian families now have children settled in Perth, Melbourne, Toronto, London or Auckland. For anyone searching in India, that is where a meaningful share of the possible matches actually live.
It is workable. It requires being deliberate about things that happen naturally when everyone is in the same city.
The community is often stronger there
This surprises people. Anglo-Indian associations in Australia and Canada are frequently more active than the ones in India — annual dinners, reunions, community groups, sometimes several hundred families in one city.
A family in Kochi may have fewer Anglo-Indian households within reach than a family in Perth.
What to establish early
Status. Citizenship, permanent residence, a work visa, a student visa — these are entirely different situations and they determine whether you could live together, when, and on what terms. Ask plainly and early.
Whether they intend to stay. Some fully intend to return. Others have not been back in a decade. Both are fine; a mismatch discovered late is not.
What your life would be. Work rights, recognition of your qualifications, how long before you could earn. A dependent visa in a quiet suburb is a very different life from the one people imagine.
Their parents. Often still in India. Who looks after them, and what is expected of you, is one of the hardest conversations in these marriages and one of the least often had in advance.
Making the distance work
Video properly. Not a supervised five minutes — real conversations, repeatedly, at ordinary times of day. You learn far more from someone tired on a weeknight than from anyone dressed for a call.
Handle the time difference deliberately. Australia is manageable. Canada and the UK mean one of you is always at an awkward hour. Notice who keeps making the effort.
Meet before deciding. Someone travels. Many families visit India regularly and can build a meeting into a trip that was happening anyway.
Introduce the families on a call. It is less strange than it sounds and it removes an enormous amount of anxiety on both sides.
The thing worth saying plainly
An Anglo-Indian family searching only within its own city is searching a community of a few dozen households. The same family willing to consider the diaspora is searching one of several hundred thousand people.
For this community more than almost any other, the willingness to look further is the single thing that decides whether the search works.
